The Art of Classical Training

Many riders struggle with knowing exactly which training method works best for their horse. Oliveira faced the same dilemma. Rather than committing to a single school of thought, he learned from the old masters, blending the best techniques from La Guérinière, Baucher, and Steinbrecht to develop a system that could be adapted to each horse’s needs.

Why Does This Matter?

Different horses require different approaches. Oliveira discovered that hot, sensitive horses, such as Thoroughbreds and Anglo-Arabs, responded well to Baucher’s method, which emphasizes in-hand work and jaw flexions. Meanwhile, warmbloods, originally bred for carriage work, needed a forward-moving approach inspired by Steinbrecht to develop balance and collection. For Iberian and Baroque breeds, following La Guérinière’s system directly often yielded the most natural and effective results.

Training with a Flexible Approach

Instead of rigidly following one method, Oliveira taught that we should assess our horse’s unique strengths and challenges before choosing the most effective training approach. Are they naturally forward-moving, or do they need encouragement? Do they tend to hollow their back, or do they need more elevation in their movement? By recognizing these characteristics, we can make more informed training choices that foster confidence and ease.

The Oliveira Mindset Shift

Training isn’t about forcing a horse into a specific mold—it’s about bringing out their natural brilliance. When we focus on adaptability, lightness, and connection, we create a partnership where the horse thrives. Oliveira’s genius was in making training an art, not a formula, and riders today can benefit from this approach by working with their horse rather than against them.

Try It and See the Difference!

The next time you ride, take a moment to assess what your horse needs in that moment. Do they need more forward energy? More balance? More relaxation? Tailor your approach accordingly, just as Oliveira did.
